Karen’s Korner – Love Where You Live

Welcome February – makes sense that this post is going to be about LOVE……

I help newcomers to Calgary find their homes all the time – and I ALWAYS caution them to understand that there is a cool thing about this city and the people who call it home!!!!

If my clients talk to co-workers, family that live here already or even the person who delivers pizza to their rental – the answer will ALWAYS be:

” move to xxxxxxx – it’s awesome! “

Calgarians are FIERCELY loyal to their neighbourhoods.  THEY LOVE where they live – and they want everyone else – to live there too!!!!

It is very nice to have people that are ADVOCATES of their community – but VERY HARD when someone arrives in the city and has NO idea how many communities we have, what schools are available, where dog parks are, is there a climbing centre (or gym/or pool/or dog park) etc etc etc.

So that is why the first stage of BUYING is sooo critical.  We HAVE to get to know each other…our likes…our dislikes…our must haves…very similar to dating???!!!!!

Home is more than just a physical space; it’s a feeling, a sense of belonging that extends beyond the walls of our houses and into the fabric of our neighborhoods. Each corner of the world holds its own unique charm, but what is it that makes us fall head over heels for the neighborhoods we call home? And why do we often find ourselves fervently advocating for others to experience the same sense of community and connection? Let’s delve into the reasons why people love their neighborhoods and eagerly invite others to join them in the journey.

1. Community Spirit:

One of the most compelling reasons we adore our neighborhoods is the sense of community they foster. From impromptu gatherings at the local park to neighbourly chats over the fence, there’s an undeniable warmth in knowing your neighbors by name and sharing in each other’s lives. Whether it’s rallying together for a neighborhood cleanup or organizing a block party, the camaraderie within our communities creates bonds that go beyond mere proximity!  Plus we live in Calgary – Stampede spirit abounds!

2. Unique Character:

Every neighborhood has its own personality, shaped by its history, culture, and the people who inhabit it. Whether it’s the tree-lined streets of a historic district, the newness of some suburban offerings, or the bustling energy of the urban downtown Calgary scene, there’s something enchanting about the distinct character of each neighbourhood. It’s this unique blend of architecture, street art, local businesses, and cultural diversity that gives our neighborhoods their charm and makes them irresistible to future buyers.

3. Convenience and Accessibility:

Convenience plays a significant role in our affection for our neighbourhoods. From easy access to amenities like grocery stores, restaurants, and public transportation to proximity to parks, schools, and healthcare facilities, living in a neighborhood that meets our daily needs with ease enhances our quality of life. The ability to walk or bike to nearby destinations not only reduces reliance on cars but also fosters a sense of connection to our surroundings.  I had dinner with clients Saturday at their new home – and the 9 min distance to the airport has changed their life!

4. Sense of Safety and Security:

Feeling safe and secure is paramount when choosing a place to call home. Whether it’s the familiarity of seeing the same friendly faces during evening strolls or the peace of mind that comes from knowing neighbors look out for one another, a strong sense of safety within our neighborhoods is essential. When we feel protected within our community, we’re more inclined to invest our time and energy into making it an even better place to live.  I ALWAYS tell my clients I want them to envision driving home after work or returning to after a long holiday…is this a place you are excited to get to????

5. Opportunities for Growth and Engagement:

Beyond the comfort of familiarity, great neighbourhoods offer opportunities for personal growth and community engagement. Whether it’s joining a local sports team, volunteering with a neighborhood association, or participating in cultural events and festivals, there’s always something happening to enrich our lives and connect us with our neighbors. The sense of pride that comes from contributing to the vibrancy and well-being of our community is unparalleled.

6. Sharing the Love:

When we love where we live, it’s only natural to want to share that love with others. Whether we’re singing the praises of our neighborhood to friends and family or actively encouraging others to move IN to our area, our enthusiasm stems from a genuine desire to see others experience the same joy and fulfillment that we do. After all, the more diverse and inclusive our communities are, the richer our lives become!

At the end of the day – just know that we will make finding your new “home” our top priority – wherever that may be – and HOWEVER long that may take!!!!!!!!

And remember – Calgary has been voted one of the friendliest cities in the world for a reason – so tough to make a bad choice!!!!!
